In the News

This display of newspaper articles from the Vancouver Sun, Vancouver Province, Vancouver News-Herald and other BC publications on the New Vista Home and Ernest Winch. Our selection is drawn from a substantial number microfilmed articles on Winch and his projects, circa 1943 to 1970, compiled by Mab Coates-Davies from the BC Legislative Library newspaper collections held by the Vancouver Central Library at 350 West Georgia Street.

Several of the articles published between 1943 and 1947 concern themselves with the origins and operations of New Vista, along with the role played by Ernest Winch in realizing his project to provide residential and support services for women patients released from the Provincial Mental Home, Essondale. Articles from the late 1940s offer a glimpse into the issues that dominated mental health policies and practices in the province, including the early development of the community mental health movement. The final selections mark the enduring legacy of the Winch’s work on behalf of people living with psychiatric labels.
