Thesis discusses the health information requirements of health care workers in VIHA Mental Health and Addiction Services and the system’s structure. Considers the strengths and weaknesses of that system, including regarding community supports.

Ballance, Dina L. Research Education in Canadian Psychiatry Residence Programs: A Survey. Unpublished MSc thesis, Memorial University, 2003. Thesis discusses psychiatry programs and how they incorporate research education into the curriculum. Also reviews a psychiatry residency program.

Brown, J. Creating the therapeutic reality: An ethnographic account of an outpatient therapeutic community at a university psychiatric hospital. Unpublished MA thesis, University of British Columbia, 2010. Thesis is an account of daily life at an outpatient centre at a university psychiatric hospital and includes a discussion of an outpatient therapeutic community.

Carten, Ron, Representatives, Informed Consent and Psychiatric Rights: Participatory Action Research by Psychiatric Patients in Vancouver, BC, Unpublished research paper, 2016.  Paper reports on the findings of a working group of persons who had been treated in the psychiatric system and conducted focus groups around the question of representation agreements for patients who do not have the right of informed consent to treatment. 

Chambers, Susan. Implementing the 1987 draft plan to downsize Riverview Hospital: Expanding the social control network. Unpublished MA thesis, Simon Fraser University, 1993. Thesis discusses deinstitutionalization in BC’s Lower Mainland region and the effects it has had on mental health practice, social service workers and ex-patients. Looks at Vancouver’s Downtown East Side.

Chan, Christina Wai Mei. Coping with Schizophrenia Among Chinese Families in Toronto.  Unpublished MSW thesis, York University, 1998. Thesis discusses how first generation Chinese immigrant families in the Toronto region deal with family members with a Schizophrenia diagnosis. Primarily considers homecare of family members.

Clark, Nancy. Community Mental Health Professionals’ Perspectives on Incorporating Spirituality in Their Care of Clients with Serious Mental Illness: A Qualitative Inquiry.  Unpublished MSc thesis, University of British Columbia, 2005. Thesis discusses the utility of spirituality in mental health care (benefits and negative impacts) and how mental health professionals might incorporate spirituality in community practice settings.

Dooley, Christopher Patrick Alan. “When Love and Skill Work Together:” Work, Skill and the Occupational Culture of Mental Nurses at the Brandon Hospital for Mental Diseases, 1919-1946.  Unpublished MA thesis, University of Manitoba, 1998. Thesis discusses the occupational identity and surrounding culture of the mental nurse as different from the general nurse, looking at the poor working conditions, long hours and restrictive regulations and considers the gendered implications of the nursing profession.

Inferential reasoning during the psychodiagnostic assessment: Attribution, hypothesis-testing strategies, and final inferences as a function of the theoretical orientation, level of experience, and temporal order. Unpublished PhD thesis, McGill University, 1991. Thesis examines the factors that affect how counselling psychologists reach a diagnosis and considers variation within the professional field of counselling psychology.

Gordon, Robert Macaire. Legal services for mental health patients: a selective review of developments in legal aid/poverty law delivery with particular emphasis on Commonwealth jurisdictions.  Unpublished MA thesis, Simon Fraser University, 1981. Thesis discusses recent developments in the mental health law and legal aid/ poverty law movements which have been dominated in Canada by the practitioner’s perceptions of patient needs and a fusion of interests involving the poverty law.

Hagman, Robert John. Mental illness, the mental health movement and the trend toward a therapeutic society. Unpublished MEd thesis, Simon Fraser University, 1974.  Thesis examines the theories, assumptions and practices used to define, identify and classify mental illness.

Hanna, Lisa J. Chronic Manic Depressives, Schizoaffectives and their Female Family Caregivers: The Political Economy of Mental Health Care and the Governance of Madness. Unpublished MA thesis, Carleton University, 1998. Thesis discusses the burden of long-term caregiving for individuals with mental health diagnoses living in the community and how this work is often undertaken by women.

Harold, Alison May. Psychiatrists and nurses: A sociological study of psychiatric ideologies and practices in an institutional setting. Unpublished MA, Simon Fraser University, 1978. Thesis discusses therapeutic ideologies and practices at the Crease Clinic at BC’s Riverview Hospital and argues that differences in psychiatric ideology are based on gender.

Jackson, Kevin. Victorian Madness in Ontario: A Mad People’s History of the Mimico Branch Asylum, 1882-1908, Major Research Paper for M.A., York University, 2016, 70 p. Taking a mad-centered perspective on institutional structures, policy and practice, and the experiences of patients, this paper reveals both institutional power and patient agency.

Johnson, M. Audrey. The Impact of Gender and Ethnicity on the Use of Mental Health Services: A Case Study of Twenty Immigrant and Refugee Women. Unpublished MSW thesis, University of British Columbia, 1988.  Thesis considers the absence of immigrant and refugee women from discussion of policy issues, programme planning and mental health literature in general and evaluates the socio-economic impacts of migrant experiences.

Joseph, B.E. Stress as a reaction to racism. Unpublished MSW thesis, McGill University, 1999. Thesis discusses how racism and sexism and stress are intertwined, in particular by looking at the lives of Black social service workers, how they experience racism and its impacts.

Krasnick, Cheryl Lynn. Insanity as a Reflection of Morality and Social Values in Nineteenth Century Canada: The London, Ontario Asylum for the Insane, 1870-1902. Unpublished MA thesis, University of Western Ontario, 1981. Thesis examines patients at the Ontario Asylum for the Insane/ London Psychiatric Hospital, discussing the types of people who were committed, the administrators, and contemporary ideas about insanity and treatment, gender roles, sexuality and family life.

Marangos-Frost, Sandy. Psychiatric Nurses’ Thoughts and Feelings about Restraint Use: A Decision Dilemma. Unpublished MSc thesis, University of Toronto, 1998. Thesis looks at the perspective of psychiatric nurses with regards to physical restraint and considers a constant care policy.

Thesis discusses burnout versus job satisfaction experienced by mental health professionals experience working with people who have severe mental illness.
