Visitor Response
We were elated by the crowd of people who came to the opening night, the enthusiasm of the groups that attended the Mental Health Café and the Inmates documentary screening, and interest of folks who came by to view the exhibit on quiet afternoons over the weeks that it was open.
Trying to encourage creativity in gathering reactions and responses to the show, we sourced a couple of 1970s typewriters, then put out a handful of felt pens and a stack of blank index cards. We added a 2018 version of a Instamatic camera for a further nod to the period.
The comments make it clear that we should have put time aside to service the typewriters (!), but clear themes emerge from what was recorded: the merit of mental health supports that come from the grassroots, the importance of history, the fun of a manual typewriter.
